Episode #6 – The Gift

In The Gift, episode #7 of Flashforward, we see the show do a great job of developing the characters. This show is truly the turning point for the plot as we see the characters really wrestle with this issue of whether the flashforwards will come true and whether the future is set in stone. In Secrets of Flashforward, we talk at length about the different characters’ responses to the flashforwards and begin two new segments, one on character analysis and one on where we identify our favorite scene in the show.

To start off the show, we begin with summarizing what happened in the last episode before talking about why we think this show was called “The Gift.” We put forth two theories as to why the name was chosen, one obvious to us and one that we think may not be as apparent.

In our analysis, we have Jeff Young, the Catholic Foodie on the show to talk with us about Renee Descartes and how he sees rationalism affecting the characters on the show. Renee Descartes represents a turning point in modern philosophy where thinkers began to use reason as their sole basis for analysis, and Jeff gives us a perspective about how that philosophy affects the characters in the show.

In our predictions, Nick presents an interesting theory about who and what is behind the blue hand group, while Pat talks about which characters the show will develop in future episodes. Listen in to see if your theory about the blue hand group fits in with Nick’s.

Finally, we finish out the episode with some listener feedback. Want to sound off on our show? We usually record on Monday evenings, so we would love to hear your thoughts and predictions. Feel free to call us at 918-919-0456 before Monday evening to give us your feedback about the show. We’ll be happy to play it as part of our own episode.

  1. I really like your show, because I like the way that you explore the spiritual aspects of the show. This is a deep show if you wish to look at it that way. It works on so many levels.

My favourite scene as far has got to be the meeting between Lloyd, Oliva and Mark, it had tension, humour, arkwardness. And had some really good lines “oh your the other woman” said Lloyd, Mark replied “no,not yet”. Wow !

Keep up the good work shot Reg from the UK

  2. Hey Reg,

Thanks for the comment! That was a very interesting scene and I really thought the actors played it very well.

My guess is that the actor playing Lloyd knows that there’s something coming and there are some subtleties in his acting that will come out over a few shows in the future that aren’t apparent now.

It seems to me that a lot of shows are going the “Usual Suspects” route – as in the movie. If you’ve seen that particular movie, Kevin Spacey had an amazing performance that changes after you’ve seen the move once. It’s a great technique.

I’m hoping that they pull that off with a character in Flashforward.

  3. Hey, i really like the podcast and i have emailed some of my theorys to your email. I like how you talk about one character and their specific flashforward each week.

    thankx for making the podcast
